Internet security professionals are responsible for more than just Internet security risks in any given organization. In most companies, these professionals help develop, manage, and maintain systems that minimize risks and threats to computer systems. These individuals must have 3-5 years experience along with advanced knowledge of a number of technologies such as: UNIX, AIX, Linux, Cisco Network IDS, Cisco Host-based IDS, eTrust Access Control, ESM, and IDS. Based on the nature of these positions and the technology needed to perform the tasks required, you will need to earn a bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science, applied mathematics, information science, or physical science. You can earn your degree from an accredited traditional college, technical school, or university or you may earn your degree online. You may also choose a Bachelor of Science in business with a concentration in information systems. The curriculum for the BS in information technology consists of a combination of design, programming, and information systems courses.

Traditional programs require a combination of general education courses such as algebra and rhetoric and major courses such as introduction to computer theory, web design, hardware and architecture, computer and network security, and operating systems. Traditional programs also require server side scripting, introduction to Java programming, software systems analysis and design, database systems, and management information systems.
